Dreams

You’re never given a dream without the power to make it come true. So goes a quote from the book “The Alchemist”. This is an extremely powerful statement.

All of us have dreams. I’m not talking about the dreams that you get when you sleep, but the ones you have when you’re wide awake and you let your mind flow into that perfect world in which you see yourself. In that world where everything is exactly the way you want it. These dreams maybe about little things that you’ve always wanted to do like spend time playing with your kids or maybe something big like following your ambition in life. It could be about taking a long vacation and just relaxing somewhere or something as critical as quitting your job and setting up your own company or moving to a different profession all together. But how many of us actually do something about those dreams? How many of us have grown up to do exactly what we wanted to do as children? I’m sure most of us have something deep in our hearts that we really want to do but have not done yet. What I’m going to do is link some things that comes in the way of us following our dreams and maybe a couple of things we need change about ourselves in order to do so.

I’ll start with the number one killer of all dreams …Fear. How often in your life has fear stopped you from doing something? Fear of your parents, fear of society, of failure, fear of taking a risk. Fear is one of the first things that stops us from doing something we want to. Fear is probably one of the first instincts to develop in the evolution process. At a very basic level fear is the primary mechanism that alerts a living being that something dangerous may happen. Its life’s early warning system. But you must understand it is only a warning. And like any warning it is imperative that you must analyze your fear and respond to it rather than react to it. You cannot choose not to get scared. But you can choose what you do about it. You can either decide to go ahead and face your fear, or you can choose to let it defeat you. The small green creature in the Star Wars movies called Yoda says “Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate and hate leads to suffering”. You must overcome every ounce of fear within you.

That brings me to my second point. What is it that helps you overcome your fear? The answer is not courage, its desire. Desire is such beautiful emotion that we as human beings have the privilege of feeling. When it’s strong enough, it can you make you do anything. You must want something bad enough to overcome your fear. You must want something bad enough to be willing to subject yourself to hardships and struggle. You must have the desire to try something, fail, try it again, fail and keep trying it till you succeed. If you want something bad enough the whole world conspires for you to get it goes another quote from The Alchemist. All of us have desire, but most of the time it’s not strong enough because we do not believe that we have it within us to fulfill our desires. We do not have enough confidence in ourselves. You must have the belief in yourself that you can do anything you want to in this world.

And that brings me to my final point. How do you get yourself to believe that you can do anything in this world? The answer lies in something that you’ve had much before you can actually remember it. Something that has survived over billions of years. Life. You have life. How many of us have actually taken the time out to understand what it means to be alive? Conceptually, can you even begin to comprehend how difficult it is to give something life? I don’t mean procreate. I mean something like giving a stone life. Giving it senses and feelings. Giving it a conscience. Giving it the ability to feel fear, desire, happiness, joy, ambition. Giving it the ability to think about things like you can. Give it the ability to choose and make decisions. Giving it the ability to reason. Giving it the power to analyze. You get all these things free with life. When you completely realize and appreciate the benefits of being alive and all the tools that life gives you, you will truly get the self belief that you can do anything.

With this I come to my conclusion. The ability to dream itself is such a wonderful aspect of life, forget about being able to make it come true. But the fact that you can dream means you have life. And life gives you all the things you need to do anything you want to. With that self belief comes the ability to fulfill any desire. With desire you can overcome any fear. And without fear you can follow any dream that you want to. “You are never given a dream without the power to make it come true”
